Valheim portals and what you cannot teleport

Portals let you move between two linked points, but they come with a firm restriction on what you can carry. This guide covers the rules first, then the two portals you can build and what they cost, then the items that block teleporting, sorted by category.

The rules

Two rules govern every portal:

  • Portals are built in pairs and linked by giving both the same tag.
  • Items marked as not teleportable cannot go through a portal. You cannot teleport while carrying one.

The second rule affects how you plan a trip. A portal does not take only the blocked item out of your inventory and let you through. Carrying a single blocked item stops you from teleporting at all. Before you step into a portal, check your inventory for anything on the list further down.

The first rule affects how you set portals up. One portal on its own goes nowhere. You build two, and you give both the same tag so they connect to each other.

The portals you can build

There are two portals in the build list. Both need 10 Greydwarf Eye, but the rest of the cost and the crafting station differ.

PieceCostStation
Portal10 Greydwarf Eye, 20 Finewood, 2 Surtling Corepiece_workbench
Portal – Stone10 Greydwarf Eye, 30 Grausten, 2 Molten Corepiece_stonecutter

Portal

The Portal costs 10 Greydwarf Eye, 20 Finewood and 2 Surtling Core. You build it at the piece_workbench station.

Portal – Stone

The Portal – Stone costs 10 Greydwarf Eye, 30 Grausten and 2 Molten Core. You build it at the piece_stonecutter station.

Comparing the two

  • Both ask for the same amount of Greydwarf Eye: 10.
  • Both ask for 2 of a core item. The Portal uses Surtling Core and the Portal – Stone uses Molten Core.
  • The main building material differs. The Portal takes 20 Finewood, while the Portal – Stone takes 30 Grausten, which is more of its material.
  • The stations differ: piece_workbench for the Portal and piece_stonecutter for the Portal – Stone.

Whichever you pick, remember that each portal is half of a pair. Plan for both ends when you gather materials, because every portal you build carries its own full cost.

What cannot be teleported

In total, 24 items cannot go through a portal. All 24 belong to a single category: Material.

Material (24 items)

Examples of Material items you cannot teleport with:

Some of these appear in several forms. Copper shows up as Copper, Copper Ore and Copper Scrap. Black Metal has a Black Metal Scrap entry. Flametal has a Flametal Ore entry. If you are carrying any form of these, check each one against the list, because the ore, the scrap and the refined version are separate entries.

Because carrying any one of these items prevents you from teleporting, the whole category matters when you plan a trip through a portal. Metals, ores and scrap are all affected, and so are items such as the Charred Cogwheel and the Dvergr Extractor.

Quick checklist before you step through

  1. Make sure both portals of the pair carry the same tag.
  2. Look through your inventory for Material items such as Copper, Iron, Bronze or any ore or scrap.
  3. Remove any blocked item before you try to teleport.

Summary

  • Portals come in pairs, and the pair is linked by a shared tag.
  • The Portal costs 10 Greydwarf Eye, 20 Finewood and 2 Surtling Core at the piece_workbench station.
  • The Portal – Stone costs 10 Greydwarf Eye, 30 Grausten and 2 Molten Core at the piece_stonecutter station.
  • 24 items cannot be teleported, all of them in the Material category.
  • Carrying one of those items means you cannot teleport.
