Valheim NPCs
Oden
Oden is the hooded figure you can see but never reach. He is an ordinary creature spawn: once The Elder is defeated, at night, in the Meadows, Swamp, Black Forest, Plains, with a 10% chance every 50 minutes.
Hugin's lessons
Hugin appears at milestones and waits at certain places until you read him. The lessons in the order the game lists them:
Welcome to Valheim
Hugin: Tip
Start tips: try to interact with things in the environment. Some items like stones, branches and pieces of flint can be collected and used for crafting. To open your inventory and crafting screen press [Inventory].
You suffered a mortal blow!
Hugin: Death
Each time you are struck down, you will forget a small part of your abilities and drop your belongings at the site of the accident. If you wish you were home by now I'd recommend building a bed, wherever home may be.
Take stock of your inventory
Hugin: Inventory
Most items must be crafted. However, due to your recent departure from Midgard, you will have to recall the true shape of objects. Just pick things up and it will all come back to you, I'm sure. My lesser brother, Munin, tells me one can fashion a stone axe out of wood and stone.
You need sustenance
Hugin: Hunger
Consuming food is of utmost importance to a viking warrior, even in the afterlife. Having a full belly both fortifies your health and improves your stamina. Food can be found everywhere in the world, and a great deal of it can be prepared at a cooking station.
A tasty morsel!
Hugin: Food
You have found a snack. Consume it to improve your health and stamina. Be aware that before long you will grow hungry again, so try to always have at least a couple of different meals ready.
You have crafted a hammer
Hugin: Hammer
With this tool you will raise mighty halls and towering fortifications. Start by building a workbench. This in turn will enable you to construct other things.
You have crafted a hoe
Hugin: Hoe
This tool is used for landscaping. You could say it is the perfect complement to the hammer. Use it to clear the ground and manipulate the terrain. It is easier to create buildings on level ground!
Be wary of the weather
Hugin: Cold
When the temperature drops at night, or if you are wet, you will suffer from being cold. This reduces your stamina regeneration. Seeking shelter by an open flame is your best option when this happens.
You need to lighten your load!
Hugin: Encumberance
If you carry too much luggage you will become encumbered, slowing you down and preventing you from regaining your stamina.
You have crafted a pickaxe
Hugin: Pickaxe
The black forest is rich in minerals. There you can find copper in the ground and tin lining the ocean shore. Now go forth and strike the earth!
You have found some ore
Hugin: Ore
Raw ore needs to be refined in the smelter before you can work it at the forge. To build a smelter you will need surtling cores. Search for them in the dark places beneath the earth.
Congratulations, warrior!
Hugin: Forsaken trophy
Return to the Sacrificial Stones with your Forsaken trophy and offer it as a sacrifice to make the Gods smile upon you.
Bonemass left you a parting gift
Hugin: Wishbone
It seems one of the many bones this living ossuary hid in his belly was a Wishbone. This bone contains powerful magic which guides you to things hidden in the earth. It can locate silver veins, but may also lead you to buried treasure...
Turn back! This is a dangerous place
Hugin: Black Forest
You have wandered into the Black Forest. This place can be very dangerous for those unprepared for it. Prove your worth by slaying Eikthyr.
You have been invaded
Hugin: Invasions
Monsters will lay siege to your camp from time to time. Strength of arms does not guarantee you victory in these situations. Build a strong defense to weather out the storm!
You have crafted a shield
Hugin: Shield
A shield allows you to block incoming damage. If your timing is perfect, the enemy may also be parried. Be careful though, if you block too many hits you will become staggered. The amount of damage you can block before becoming staggered depends on your maximum health, so if you plan on tanking a lot of damage you should eat food that increases your health. Heavier shields will block more damage but will also slow you down.
Eitr
Hugin: Eitr
The mists permeate all that live and grow in these lands, and now it is a part of you as well. With eitr you will be able to cast all sorts of powerful spells. Try to find more eitr-infused ingredients to increase your ability.
Well met, adventurer…
Hugin: Trader Haldor
Rumour has it that some traders have found themselves into the tenth world. If you find yourself in need of special commodities you might want to seek them out. One of them should be somewhere in a forest such as this. I'm terribly sorry I can't be of more help... you'll have to keep an eye out.
Why, hello there.
Hugin: Trader Hildir
I've heard that a trader was seen in an area not unlike this one. She is an odd character indeed, but may have very special goods for sale. However, rumour has it that her stocks have been raided. She might need a helping hand, and you are starting to look fairly capable by now.
Watch your step, warrior.
Mysterious Location
I have a feeling that this place could be more challenging than one might expect.
Keep a cool head!
Hugin: Ashlands
You have discovered the Ashlands, the very hottest parts of the tenth world. Here, water boils without a cauldron, and anything flammable can be set alight with just a spark. Be careful!
Ahoy!
Hugin: Boiling waters · after
It seems you have ventured to the boiling waters of the south. As you surely noted, this can be a deadly pursuit. To traverse these waters you will need to build something sturdier if you dont want to sleep with the fishes.
Adrenaline surges through you!
Hugin: Trinkets
Kra-kraaa! Warrior, is that a gleaming trinket I see in your grasp? Don it with pride, and let its power course through you as you strike down your foes. Once your adrenaline reaches its peak, you are sure to be rewarded!
You have found a mould!
Hugin: Moulds
Moulds can yield fascinating results! But it is not enough to merely fill them with materials – they also need to be hardened with the help of extreme temperatures...
It is time...
Hugin: Kall Fimbulbringer defeated
Well done, warrior! You have found the sacrificial blood, the final key to restoring this realm. Now the All-Father has one last task for you – prove yourself worthy by journeying back to where it all began!
Calling forth the beast
Hugin: Forsaken altars
You have found the summoning place of one of the Forsaken. Make the correct offering at their altar and they will come. Be wary though, the Forsaken are not easy prey, so craft a wicked weapon, don your finest armour, and eat a hearty meal before engaging them in combat.
A new tool
Hugin: Artisan press
Now you'll be able to craft ceramic tiles, which have excellent heat insulation. You'll need them if you're to travel southwards!
Ahoy!
Hugin: Boiling waters
It seems you have ventured to the boiling waters of the south. As you surely noted, this can be a deadly pursuit. To traverse these waters you will need to build something sturdier if you dont want to sleep with the fishes.
A powerful siege engine
Hugin: Battering ram
The enemy fortresses are built from sturdy stuff. You'll need machines like this one if you're to break through their walls.
A headrest for the weary!
Hugin: Settling in
Sleep the night away in your bed and awaken feeling refreshed and full of energy. Another improvement to your home would be some chests where you can store items. It is good practice to always have some spare equipment, if something unfortunate should happen to you while exploring...
Congratulations, warrior!
Hugin: Forsaken trophy
Return to the Sacrificial Stones with your Forsaken trophy and offer it as a sacrifice to make the Gods smile upon you.
Treasures lie below
Hugin: Dungeons
Delves and dungeons can be found across the tenth world. They are monuments of the past, and most often filled with the riches of civilizations long lost. Remember to bring a light source!
Dvergr
Hugin: Dvergr
Kra-kraaa! Stubborn fools! The Dvergr will tolerate strangers and vagrants but they are quick to anger should you upset them... Which I am sure you will manage to do sooner or later.
Dvergrhalls
Hugin: Dvergr homes
As I am sure my lesser brother tells you, the halls beyond are very impressive... Just try not to get lost in the winding tunnels and secret passageways will you?
Journey to Valhalla
Hugin: To Valhalla
Well done, warrior! At long last, you have slain all Forsaken and proven yourself worthy. The gates of Valhalla are now open to you – all you need to do is to let the valkyrie carry you there. But worry not, you will always be welcome here in the tenth world, should you wish to return.
Faderember
Hugin: Eternal Pyre
It is not just a dragon's breath that burns bright, but its very essence as well. One can harness it, with enough skill and patience...
Giants
Hugin: Giant remains
Kraa! Pick their bones and break their domes!
You have built a ward
Hugin: Ward
The ward emits a strong aura which prevents other vikings from building things. It also locks all doors within its influence.
Strange forces are invading!
Hugin: Jotun Invasions
"Beware the approach of the Jotun army. You must meet them at their point of invasion and halt their advances, if you are to ever set the tenth world right..."
Magetable
Hugin: Galdr table
Trying your hand at scrying the runes are you? I'm impressed, sorcerer! Charms and conjurations will take their toll. If you wish to master the arts you must find appropriate sustenance. As it happens, the parts around here are looking ripe with all sorts of delicious new ingredients to gather. Lucky you!
Record your exploration
Hugin: Cartography table
With this table you can record and share your explorations of the tenth world. Use the toolbox to record your progress and take a look at this large map to copy what others have explored.
You have found a mould!
Hugin: Moulds
Moulds can yield fascinating results! But it is not enough to merely fill them with materials – they also need to be hardened with the help of extreme temperatures...
You have built a portal
Hugin: Portals
Portals are great for fast travel between different parts of the world. Of course, you need to build one on the other end as well, then give the pair the same name and they will be automatically connected!
One last trial...
Hugin: The Prison
Be wary! The being imprisoned beyond this gate is mighty, more so than any other to be found in all of Valheim. You would do well to prepare accordingly before you venture forth to this final foe.
Means of protection
Hugin: Shield generator
Kraa! This should keep away whatever the sky might throw at you.
You have built a smelter
Hugin: Smelter
Deposit your raw ore in this furnace and it will melt away all impurities, leaving you with a bar of refined metal to work at the forge. You will need coal to fuel the smelter. Coal can be produced by building a kiln and loading it with wood.
Welcome to the tenth world, warrior
Hugin: Welcome
I am Hugin, sent here to guide you in your travels. The megaliths surrounding you are the Sacrificial Stones. They represent the Forsaken, which you must slay in order to ascend to Valhalla.
This stone is a Vegvisir
Hugin: Vegvisirs
These magical stones were scattered throughout the lands by Oden as signposts pointing toward the ritual grounds of the Forsaken. If inspected closer, this one will reveal the summoning place of Eikthyr, your first prey. He is a mighty beast, so you need to properly arm yourself before even attempting to defeat him.
Oden is pleased
Hugin: Eikthyr defeated
You have been granted the power of Eikthyr. Use it in times of need. Your next target dwells in the black forest. Go there, explore the lands, and uncover their lost treasures and resources. The Elder awaits!
Tissueref
Hugin: Eitr refinery
Warrior, what kind of contraption is this?! It looks dangerous... There is a grinding funnel up here, I wonder what you will put into it.
Hear ye, wanderer!
Hugin: Forge of Potential
Finding this place of ancient power is no easy feat, and those who have done so stand to gain a great deal! A word of warning, however – while the Forge may work brilliantly in your favour, it may just as easily shatter that which you seek to refine...
You need to lighten your load!
Hugin: Encumberance
If you carry too much luggage you will become encumbered, slowing you down and preventing you from regaining your stamina.
Wispattractor
Hugin: Wisp fountain
A strange edifice indeed. I wonder what it will attract. Let us just perch here for a while and see what happens... Warrior, I am bored. Besides, it is not my job to babysit the likes of you long into the night... Just be vigilant and I'm sure you will be rewarded.
You have built a workbench
Hugin: Workbench
A workbench allows you to craft complex items as well as giving you access to lots of more building pieces to construct with the hammer.
Yggroot
Hugin: Yggdrasil roots
Kraa! Although severed from the trunk, I can see that magic still lingers in the roots of the old ash. Needless to say, no weapon of your design will be able to break the bark. You need something better, fashioned by more capable hands.
Munin
Defeated goblinking
Munin: Introduction · after Yagluth is defeated
Kraa! Well met, wanderer… I am Munin, brother to Hugin. I bring greetings from the Allfather. His eye sees through mine, I carry his words beneath my tongue. Keep his ways and I will come to you again…
Defeated queen
Ashlands awaits... · after The Queen is defeated
Well fought warrior! My brother and I will feast well on this offering! Yet still there is work for your arm… In the Ashlands dark clouds blister the sky and the King stirs on his bed of embers. Until today you have only quarreled. Now you must prepare yourself for war…
A fragment of the past
Munin: Bell fragment
Kraa! A sad memory lingers here... A faint echo in the air... Once these rang for joy to celebrate his passing but now he cannot bear the sound nor the reminder. If you seek to bring him give them voice once more.
And so the saga comes to an end...
Munin: Forsaken Defeated
You have fought well, warrior. Thanks to you, the Forsaken are no more, and this world can once again be reunited with the rest of Yggdrasil. But that is a story for another time! For now, you ought to claim your reward in Valhalla, don't you think?
What Munin says
Munin carries Oden's words from Yagluth onward; his lines are about the world rather than how to play. 22 lines, by where they come up:
In the Ashlands 6
Kraa! Poor pickings here. Empty skulls scoured clean by the flames. Barely a trace of memory left…
Well met little swordling! Look around you this is the Waste of the Emerald Flame… This is the end of all pride the fire that consumes itself… Tread carefully!
Kraa! I bring a message from the Allfather. Honor is forged in flame. Strike hard upon the anvil spare not the steel!
Kraahaha! A fellow carrion bird! Look at you picking over these poor dead remains…
Hmmm... How do you yet live warrior? Perhaps you have found your element here in the furnace? Curious...
Kraa! A sad memory lingers here... A faint echo in the air... Once these rang for joy to celebrate his passing but now he cannot bear the sound nor the reminder. If you seek to bring him give them voice once more.
In the Deep North 6
Long ago, others attempted to sail to these lands. It appears they made it here, but that there was no way for them to make the return journey...
Kraa! Strange folk dwell here, created from the very evil itself...
This is a place of transformation. Certain creatures find a new purpose here, becoming something more than they once were. Are you one of these creatures, I wonder?
Kraa! Those who first ventured here did not know about the underground thieves. If they had known, they would certainly have chosen better places to build their homesteads.
Watch these lands for memorials in the honour of the warriors who came before you. They may bestow a boon upon you, should you prove yourself worthy in their eyes.
Long before the Allfather summoned you, others were tasked to guard this world. Even though many years have gone by since their passing, they still can't seem to find peace. Be kind, and do not disturb them.

Kraa! Well met, wanderer… I am Munin, brother to Hugin. I bring greetings from the Allfather. His eye sees through mine, I carry his words beneath my tongue. Keep his ways and I will come to you again…
Kraa! All eyes are on this one. Big eyes, little eyes, eyes from above and eyes from below. Even the trees have eyes…
Still you live, warrior? I had hoped for some little snack from your corpse, some morsel of carrion… Still, the Allfather will be pleased.
Are you lost in the fog, warrior? I see things your eyes once knew, paths you trod and faces you loved. Poor warrior…
Kraa! Do not forget your quest, wanderer! Remember why the Allfather sent you here. The Forsaken Ones must be destroyed. Remember!
Ah, you have grown into a fine warrior! As a courtesy, I should tell you that when you die, we have agreed that Hugin will have your left eye as a treat and I will have your right. But we wish you well!
Kraa! Serve the Allfather well and he has given me leave to restore your memories. Do you remember the life you had before this one? It yet remembers you...
I had not thought you would survive so long… But guard against pride, friend. Battlefields are banquets to me, I know how all great warriors end...
Kraa! Hear me now, I'll riddle you no longer. I am great Munin, the treasure-house of memory. I sit on the left shoulder of the Allfather and do his bidding in the ten worlds. I have seen many great warriors rise and fall but you are among the greatest. Know that Oden himself is watching you...
Kraa! The Allfather sends tidings! He waits on your word to send the great bridge. Kill the Forsaken Ones and clear the way!
