Valheim seed map

Type any seed in the sidebar and the map shows that world: terrain and biomes first, then the boss altars, traders, dungeons, villages and runestones. It is the game's own world generation running in your browser, so what you see here is what you get when you create the world in Valheim.

World generation matches Valheim 1.0.17. It is checked value by value against the real dedicated server of that version, and this page changes only when the game's generation does.

How to use it

Enter a seed and press Generate map, or press Random for a seed like the one the game makes. The sidebar turns each kind of marker on and off: boss altars, Haldor, Hildir and the Bog Witch, crypts, infested mines, frost caves, camps, runestones and wild beehives. Hover a marker for its name and coordinates, click it for the details, and use Find a location to list the nearest ones. The link in the address bar holds the seed, so you can send a world to a friend by copying the page address. Already playing? The world viewer opens your own world and character files and shows the ground you have explored, your pins and your bases. Looking for a world to start on? The best seeds were measured on thousands of generated worlds.

How world generation works

The seed text is hashed into a number that drives every layer of the generator. From that number the game derives the continents and oceans, the rivers, and the biomes by distance and noise (the Ashlands in the far south, the Deep North in the far north), then walks a fixed list of location types and rolls many placement attempts for each: boss altars first, then villages, dungeons, camps and ruins. Two worlds with the same seed on the same version are identical.

The playable world is a disc about 10 kilometres across with the Sacrificial Stones near the centre. Distances on the map are distances in the game, so you can plan portals, boss runs and trade routes before you start.

Seed map FAQ

How do I find the seed of my world?

Open the world list in the main menu: the seed is shown next to each world. On a server, press F2 in the game. The world viewer also reads it from your world file.

How long can a seed be?

Ten characters, the limit of the game's own seed field. The map cuts anything longer, because the game could never create such a world.

Is the map exact?

Yes. The generator is compared with the game itself, not with our reading of the code: the same seeds are generated on the real dedicated server, and the heights, the biomes and every location the game places are compared with what the map computes. Boss altars, traders, dungeons, camps and runestones are where you will find them in the game.

Why does the map show several altars for the same boss?

Because the game places several. Every world has multiple altars per boss, spread over the map, and any of them works: the vegvisir you find in the game points to the nearest one. Pick whichever is closest.

Do seeds change with game updates?

A seed gives the same world on the same game version, and the generation can change between versions. This map follows the current version, 1.0.17. A world made by an older version, or changed by mods, can differ from what the map shows.
