Valheim 0.210.4

Patch 0.210.4 is a public test build, so it may be unstable, and players are told to back up their saves before playing. It fixes a bug that crashed the game and often reset the world, and it adds an automatic backup system for saves. It also changes how and when the game saves and tidies up character and world handling.

New content 3

  • An autobackup system keeps one 2-hour and one 12-hour backup by default, and this can be customised in misc settings.
  • On dedicated servers the default backup setting is 4, and it can be customised with the new parameters -backups, -backupshort and -backuplong.
  • Dedicated servers get a new -saveinterval parameter to customise how often the game saves.

Changes and balancing 4

  • The game now saves after you sleep and at 30 minute intervals, and using the manual save console command resets that timer.
  • If all players leave a multiplayer session, the game returns to a pause state when the host is alone, as it did previously.
  • Characters with duplicate filenames are now hidden, and characters whose names differ from their filename are displayed so renamed files can be told apart.
  • The dedicated server manual PDF has been updated with the new parameters.

Fixes 6

  • Fixed a bug that made the game crash, often resetting the game world in the process; both the crash and the reset are solved.
  • Steam Cloud saves were changed to avoid a particular crash during saving that could corrupt the world save.
  • World saving is now disabled for a corrupted or incompatible-version world file and the game returns to the main menu, while dedicated servers shut down if the world is corrupt.
  • Players can no longer create a world with the same name when Steam Cloud saves are enabled.
  • Local and legacy characters are now deleted properly when Steam Cloud is enabled.
  • Fixed the beehive VFX on hit.

Other 2

  • Players on a dedicated server should make sure the server host has updated the game before playing, to avoid unforeseen issues.
  • A guide is available for restoring progress if you lost a world to this issue before the patch.
