Valheim 1.0.14
Patch 1.0.14 is a hotfix-style update that touches a bit of everything. It adds keybinding and accessibility options, improves graphics performance, and updates Deep North music. It also fixes many multiplayer, terrain, achievement and platform-specific problems.
Patch 1.0.14 is a hotfix and improvement release that touches many parts of the game, from keybindings to music. The biggest changes for most players are the new keyboard options, a fix for a bug that could stop you from joining remote servers, and a fix for terrain modification problems in multiplayer.
The patch takes a few days to reach all platforms. Crossplay keeps working in the meantime, so you can still play with friends on other platforms.
What is new
The keyboard gains several new options:
- An alternate dodge key
- Hotbar rebinding, on top of the existing 1-8 keys
- Support for rebinding the radial wheel
- Support for removing keybinds
Other additions and tweaks:
- An accessibility setting lets you toggle blocking.
- A new toggle in Gameplay settings skips the intro cinematic on startup.
- When "attack towards look direction" is enabled, your character's rotation now also snaps toward the intended attack direction while attacking. Before, this happened only when the option was disabled.
- On gamepad, the Motion Sensor and Sheath keybinds are swapped back, returning Sheath to its original keybind. Motion Sensor is now activated with the alt-key plus the Sheath button.
What changed
Performance work in this patch:
- GPU performance is better when tessellation is disabled, because unnecessary GPU overhead has been removed in that case.
- Heightmap shadows are calculated more accurately and at a lower performance cost.
- Particle systems in the main menu are optimized to reduce overdraw.
- Switch 2 gets multiple GPU performance improvements.
Gameplay and content changes:
- The PlayerBase effect on some build pieces is increased, so they block enemies more.
- Jotun puffs and Magecaps no longer respawn.
- Placeable boulders now persist, can only be placed on the ground, break if the ground under them goes away, and give ground-level support.
- The Ballista now accepts all new trophies: all Deep North enemies, plus Bjorn and Vile.
- Seal and Baby Seal colliders are tweaked to match their bodies better.
- The Deep North and Winding Tunnels music is rebalanced, with some clicks removed when looping. Location music in the Deep North is mixed better.
What was fixed
Input and tools
- Stick input pre-processing was inaccurate: it was heavily weighted toward axis-aligned movement and 30% too slow diagonally. This is fixed.
- Deep North battleaxes now have the correct tool tier and can cut all the trees.
- Errors when using the grappling hook's secondary attack on creatures are fixed.
Multiplayer and saving
- Characters did not save correctly when you pressed Save manually on a server hosted by someone else. This is fixed.
- Biomedata caching is disabled. The cache could end up in an invalid state that made it impossible to join remote servers.
- Terrain modifications by players or monsters could cause performance and portal issues in multiplayer, such as terrain seams and modifications becoming undone. This is fixed.
- Steam Cloud could get stuck in an invalid state if the game crashed while saving. This is fixed.
Cheated items
- Player characters were sometimes wrongly marked as temporary cheaters, which caused items dropped by monsters they killed to be marked as having a cheated origin. This is fixed.
- Cheated stackable items no longer stack with regular items, so uncheated stacks can't be "corrupted" into a cheated state.
- The "pevents" Persistent Events devcommand is now behind the devcommands toggle and is no longer available in the console by default.
World and items
- Several Ashlands water issues are fixed, including VFX and water damage not stopping.
- Timberwood build pieces no longer show up in earlier biome locations.
- The Helmet of the Protector was craftable directly via the Black Forge. This is fixed.
- The correct music now plays in Mörkhalla.
- Various crashes and errors that could happen in rare circumstances are fixed.
Achievements
- "No time for snoozing" could sometimes fail to unlock in multiplayer. This is fixed.
- The Homesteader and The Architect achievements could unlock repeatedly. This is fixed.
- On PlayStation 5, "Stronger Together" is now achievable.
Platform display issues
- Switch 2: the TV output no longer switches from 120 Hz to 60 Hz while the virtual keyboard is open or while in the home menu, when using the balanced graphics preset and playing online multiplayer. The switch caused a black screen when entering and leaving these menus.
- PlayStation 5: the TV output no longer switches from 120 Hz to 60 Hz while in the home menu on the balanced graphics preset, which caused a black screen when entering and leaving that menu.
Questions
Can I still play with friends on other platforms while the patch rolls out?
