Valheim mage armor: every set compared

Mage armor in Valheim trades the heavy physical defense of metal cuirasses for magic utility and lighter mobility. Across the Mistlands, Ashlands, and Deep North, three armor sets are designed for magic users: the Mage (Eitr-weave) set, the Mage (Ashlands) (Embla) set, and the Deep North mage (Caller) set. This guide compares all three sets using the game's data: their total armor, movement speed modifiers, set bonuses, crafting stations, and material costs.

Comparison of all mage armor sets

Valheim contains three dedicated mage armor sets, introduced in progression order across the Mistlands, Ashlands, and Deep North biomes. Each set consists of three pieces: headwear, chest robes, and trousers.

CallerDeep NorthDeep North mage set66 to 84-4%No set bonusGaldr Table (Level 3)

Across all three sets, the chest robes and trousers each carry a -2% movement speed modifier (-4% total for the full set), while the headpieces carry no movement speed penalty (0%). Total weight is 11 units for each 3-piece set (1 unit for the headpiece, 5 units for the chest robes, and 5 units for the trousers). All pieces have a base durability of 1000, increasing by 200 durability per quality level up to 1600 at quality 4.

Eitr-weave set (Mistlands)

The Mage set is the first mage armor set in Valheim's progression, crafted as Eitr-weave pieces at the Galdr Table in the Mistlands.

Pieces and stats

  • Eitr-weave Hood: 16 base armor (22 at quality 4), 1 weight, 0% speed modifier.
  • Eitr-weave Robe: 16 base armor (22 at quality 4), 5 weight, -2% speed modifier.
  • Eitr-weave Trousers: 16 base armor (22 at quality 4), 5 weight, -2% speed modifier.

Worn together, the full set provides 48 base armor and reaches 66 armor at quality 4. It carries a total set size of 3 and is associated with the Eitr-infused set effect (SetEffect_MageArmor), which grants a 1.5x Eitr regeneration multiplier and enhances elemental magic skill.

Crafting requirements

Crafting the base Eitr-weave set requires a Level 1 Galdr Table and the following materials:

Galdr Table station improvements found in the game data include the Rune Table, Unfading Candles, Feathery Wreath, and Standing Loom.

Embla set (Ashlands)

The Mage (Ashlands) set (Embla set) is the second tier of mage armor, crafted in the Ashlands.

Pieces and stats

  • Hood of Embla: 19 base armor (25 at quality 4), 1 weight, 0% speed modifier.
  • Robes of Embla: 19 base armor (25 at quality 4), 5 weight, -2% speed modifier.
  • Trousers of Embla: 19 base armor (25 at quality 4), 5 weight, -2% speed modifier.

Worn together, the full set provides 57 base armor and reaches 75 armor when upgraded to quality 4. The pieces carry a set size of 3 in game records, but no set effect is linked in the data.

Crafting requirements

Crafting the base Embla set requires a Level 2 Galdr Table and the following materials:

Caller set (Deep North)

The Deep North mage set (Caller set) is the third tier of mage armor, originating in the Deep North.

Pieces and stats

  • Headdress of the Caller: 22 base armor (28 at quality 4), 1 weight, 0% speed modifier.
  • Robes of the Caller: 22 base armor (28 at quality 4), 5 weight, -2% speed modifier.
  • Trousers of the Caller: 22 base armor (28 at quality 4), 5 weight, -2% speed modifier.

Worn together, the three pieces provide 66 base armor and reach 84 armor at quality 4. In the game data, Caller pieces do not carry a set size property and have no set bonus.

Crafting requirements

In the Deep North, creating Caller armor begins with casting each piece using its respective mould at a Level 3 Galdr Table. The base recipes craft the cast pieces (Cast: Headdress of the Caller, Cast: Robes of the Caller, and Cast: Trousers of the Caller), with item descriptions noting that the armour needs to be hardened with frost. The finished armor pieces are marked as onlyUpgrade: true in recipes.json, with the following material requirements:

Which set to craft at each stage of progression

Mage armor progression follows the biome order of the late game: Mistlands, then Ashlands, then Deep North. At each stage the mage set has half the armor of the heavy set of the same biome. In the Mistlands and Ashlands it also moves faster (-4% instead of -10%); in the Deep North the heavy set has no movement penalty, so the mage set is the slower of the two.

Mistlands: Mage set vs Carapace set

The Mage set is crafted at a Level 1 Galdr Table using materials gathered in the Mistlands and earlier biomes: Refined Eitr, Scale Hide, Feathers, Iron, and Linen Thread.

  • Armor: The Mage set provides 48 base armor and 66 armor at quality 4. By comparison, the heavy Mistlands Carapace set provides 96 base armor and 114 at quality 4 (48 more armor).
  • Movement speed: The Mage set costs -4% movement speed (-2% chest, -2% legs, 0% head), whereas the Carapace set costs -10% movement speed (-5% chest, -5% legs, 0% head).
  • Crafting station: Mage armor is crafted at the Galdr Table (Level 1), whereas Carapace armor is crafted at the Black Forge (Level 1).
  • Materials: The base Mage set uses 56 Linen Thread, 55 Refined Eitr, 15 Scale Hide, 10 Feathers, and 2 Iron, whereas the base Carapace set uses 56 Carapace, 9 Scale Hide, 12 Refined Eitr, 10 Iron, and 2 Mandibles.

Ashlands: Mage (Ashlands) set vs Flametal set

The Mage (Ashlands) set (Embla) advances your defense to 57 base armor and 75 at quality 4, requiring a Level 2 Galdr Table.

  • Armor: The Mage (Ashlands) set gives 57 base armor and 75 at quality 4. By comparison, the heavy Ashlands Flametal set gives 114 base armor and 132 at quality 4 (57 more armor).
  • Movement speed: The Mage (Ashlands) set maintains the -4% movement speed penalty (-2% chest, -2% legs), whereas Flametal carries a -10% movement speed penalty (-5% chest, -5% legs).
  • Materials: Crafting the Mage (Ashlands) set introduces Asksvin Hide and 5 Flametal at the Galdr Table, whereas the base Flametal armor set requires 56 Flametal, 9 Asksvin Hide, 12 Charred Bone, 4 Refined Eitr, and 1 Morgen Heart at the Black Forge.

Deep North: Deep North mage set vs Deep North heavy set

The Deep North mage set (Caller) reaches 66 base armor and 84 at quality 4, crafted at a Level 3 Galdr Table.

Armor progression overview

Comparing the three mage sets side-by-side demonstrates an increase of 9 base armor and 9 max armor with each biome tier:

  • Mistlands (Mage): 48 base armor to 66 max armor (Galdr Table Level 1)
  • Ashlands (Embla): 57 base armor to 75 max armor (Galdr Table Level 2)
  • Deep North (Caller): 66 base armor to 84 max armor (Galdr Table Level 3)
