Valheim armor sets: every set, its armor and its bonus

Armor in Valheim comes in sets, and each set differs in how much protection it gives, how it changes your movement speed and whether it carries a bonus. This guide lists every set in the order of the table, gives the pieces of each, and then goes through the early, middle and late sets. The last section covers which sets trade speed for armor.

All armor sets

Armor is the total for the full set. Speed is the movement speed change in percent. A dash in the biome column means the set has no biome listed.

Early game: Meadows and Black Forest

Rag is the starting point, and it has the lowest armor of any set: 2 at quality 1 and 4 fully upgraded. It has no speed change and no bonus.

Leather is also a Meadows set. It starts at 6 and reaches 24 when fully upgraded, which is a large gain in armor for a set with no speed change and no bonus.

Troll leather comes from the Black Forest. It begins at 18 and reaches 36 fully upgraded, with no speed change. Its bonus makes you more sneaky.

Bronze is the other regular Black Forest set. It gives 24 at quality 1 and 42 fully upgraded, but it slows you by 10 percent. It has no bonus.

Berserker is a Black Forest set built around its bonus rather than its armor. It gives 21 at quality 1 and 39 fully upgraded, with no speed change. The bonus increases damage and regeneration, but weakens you against physical damage.

Fully upgraded, Troll leather (36) is a little ahead of Berserker (39 is higher, but Berserker carries a physical damage weakness). Bronze reaches 42 but is the only early set that slows you.

Middle game: Swamp, Mountains and Plains

Root is a Swamp set. It gives 24 at quality 1 and 42 fully upgraded, the same armor figures as Bronze, but the speed change is -4 instead of -10. Its bonus helps you focus your bow skill.

Iron is also from the Swamp. It gives 42 at quality 1 and 60 fully upgraded, with a -10 speed change and no bonus.

Fenris has no biome listed, but it fits between Root and Iron in armor. It gives 30 at quality 1 and 48 fully upgraded. It is the only set that makes you faster, at +9. Its bonus lets you pass through fire, and your fists feel the power of the beast.

Wolf is a Mountains set. It gives 40 at quality 1 and 52 fully upgraded, with a -10 speed change and no bonus. At quality 1 it is close to Iron's 42, but fully upgraded it falls behind Iron's 60.

Lox comes from the Plains. It gives 48 at quality 1 and 66 fully upgraded with no speed change. Its fur lets you blend in with the wilderness and move about unseen.

Undead berserker is the other Plains set. It matches Lox on armor, with 48 and 66, and has no speed change. Its bonus is the same as Berserker's: more damage and regeneration, but weaker against physical damage.

Late game: the highest-armor sets

The remaining sets have no biome listed, and most of them reach higher armor than the sets above. They fall into three groups by speed change.

Heavy sets at -10. Padded gives 78 at quality 1 and 96 fully upgraded. Carapace gives 96 and 114. Flametal gives 114 and 132. None of them has a bonus.

Mage sets at -4. These have lower armor than the other late sets and no bonuses.

Sets with no speed change.

Which sets trade speed for armor

Six sets slow you by 10 percent: Bronze, Iron, Wolf, Padded, Carapace and Flametal. Four sets slow you by 4 percent: Root, Mage, Mage (Ashlands) and Deep North mage. Fenris speeds you up by 9 percent, and every other set leaves your speed unchanged.

The table shows several cases where a slower set can be matched or beaten by a faster one:

  • Bronze and Root have identical armor (24 and 42), but Root costs 4 percent of your speed instead of 10 and adds a bow bonus.
  • Mage and Lox both give 48 and 66. Mage costs 4 percent of your speed, while Lox costs none and lets you move about unseen. Undead berserker also matches them at no speed cost.
  • Flametal gives 132 fully upgraded at -10. Deep North medium gives 120 at no speed cost, and Deep North heavy gives 150 at no speed cost.
  • Carapace gives 114 fully upgraded at -10. Ashlands medium gives 102 at no speed cost.
  • Fenris gives 48 fully upgraded, and Fenris is the only set in the table that moves you faster than normal.

If you want to keep your normal speed, the sets with a change of 0 run from Rag at 4 fully upgraded up to Deep North heavy at 150. If you accept a penalty, Iron reaches 60 at -10, and the late sets Padded, Carapace and Flametal reach 96, 114 and 132 at the same penalty.
