The best armor sets in Valheim, biome by biome

This guide follows armor through the Black Forest, the Swamp and the Plains, in that order. For each biome you get the sets you can craft from its materials, the pieces in each set, the armor value at quality 1 and at the highest quality, and the change to your movement speed. The armor numbers are the totals for the whole set, and every table is read the same way.

Black Forest

Two sets are on offer here. Both leave your movement speed untouched, so the choice comes down to armor alone.

SetPiecesArmor at quality 1Armor at max qualityMovement speed
berserker_armorHeaddress of the Bear, Loincloth of the Bear, Patterns of the Bear21390%
trollTroll Leather Hood, Troll Leather Trousers, Troll Leather Tunic18360%

The berserker_armor set, made of the Headdress of the Bear, the Loincloth of the Bear and the Patterns of the Bear, comes out ahead at both quality levels: 21 against 18 at quality 1, and 39 against 36 at max quality. The Troll Leather Hood, Troll Leather Trousers and Troll Leather Tunic give up armor for no gain elsewhere, since neither set changes how fast you move.

Both sets also gain armor as you raise their quality. The troll set at max quality (36) is still well above its own quality 1 value (18), and the same holds for berserker_armor. If you can only invest in one Black Forest set, berserker_armor is the stronger of the two on every number listed.

Swamp

The Swamp has a single set in this guide.

SetPiecesArmor at quality 1Armor at max qualityMovement speed
root_armorRoot Harnesk, Root Leggings, Root Mask2442-4%

The Root Harnesk, Root Leggings and Root Mask beat both Black Forest sets on armor. At quality 1 they reach 24, above the 21 of berserker_armor. At max quality they reach 42, above its 39.

This is the first set in the guide that costs you speed. Wearing it changes your movement speed by -4%, so you move slower than you do in any Black Forest set. The armor gain over berserker_armor is modest, so the slowdown is part of the price of the upgrade. Whether it is worth it depends on how you play, and the numbers above are all you need to weigh it.

Plains

The Plains offer two sets with identical numbers.

SetPiecesArmor at quality 1Armor at max qualityMovement speed
loxLox Fur Hood, Lox Fur Jacket, Lox Fur Trousers48660%
berserker_armor_undeadVilebone Cage, Vilebone Drapes, Vilebone Visage48660%

The Lox Fur Hood, Lox Fur Jacket and Lox Fur Trousers match the Vilebone Cage, Vilebone Drapes and Vilebone Visage exactly. Both reach 48 at quality 1 and 66 at max quality, and neither changes your movement speed. Nothing in the numbers separates them, so pick whichever you prefer.

Compared with the Swamp, the Plains sets are far ahead. They have much more armor at both quality levels, and they bring back the 0% speed change that the root_armor set took away. You get a large armor increase and no slowdown.

Side-by-side comparison

Here is the best set from each biome, judged on armor first.

BiomeBest setArmor at quality 1Armor at max qualityMovement speed
Black Forestberserker_armor21390%
Swamproot_armor2442-4%
Plainslox and berserker_armor_undead (tied)48660%

A few things stand out:

  • The Black Forest sets are the weakest. Every Black Forest figure is lower than the matching Swamp figure, and both are far below the Plains.
  • The Swamp is the only biome that costs you speed. It is the only set with a nonzero movement speed change, at -4%.
  • The Plains tie. Two different sets share the same armor and the same 0% speed change, so neither has an edge.
  • Quality matters in every case. In all five sets, armor at max quality is higher than at quality 1.

How armor climbs from step to step

Follow the best set in each biome and the pattern is clear. At quality 1 the best armor goes from 21 in the Black Forest to 24 in the Swamp, then to 48 in the Plains. At max quality it goes from 39 to 42 to 66.

The first move, from the Black Forest to the Swamp, is a small step up in armor, and it comes with the -4% speed cost. The second move, from the Swamp to the Plains, is a much bigger jump, and the speed penalty disappears. If you are weighing your progress by armor, the Plains is where your protection changes most.

Another way to see the same thing is to compare a fully upgraded set from an earlier biome with a fresh set from a later one. The best max quality armor in the Swamp is 42, which is still below the Plains value at quality 1, which is 48. A Plains set at quality 1 is therefore already worth more armor than a Swamp set pushed to its limit. The same goes for the Black Forest, where the best max quality figure is 39. This tells you that moving on to the next set matters more than squeezing the last bit of quality out of an older one, at least when you compare the Swamp with the Plains.

Between the Black Forest and the Swamp the picture is different. Max quality berserker_armor is 39, above the 24 that root_armor gives at quality 1, so an upgraded Black Forest set stays ahead of a fresh Swamp set. Only when you also upgrade the Swamp set does it pull ahead, to 42, and even then the margin is small.

To sum up:

  • Black Forest: choose berserker_armor over troll for more armor with no speed change.
  • Swamp: root_armor gives more armor than anything earlier but slows you by -4%.
  • Plains: lox and berserker_armor_undead are identical, with the highest armor in this guide and no speed change.
