Valheim Deep North guide: creatures, resources, places and the boss
The Deep North is the new biome that Valheim 1.0 sends you into. It brings new creatures, food ingredients, a spread of places to explore and a new boss, Kall Fimbulbringer. This guide covers each of those, then the wider list of what 1.0 added to the game.
Creatures
Eleven creatures are listed for the Deep North. Health values are below, sorted from highest to lowest.
| Creature | Health |
|---|---|
| Barka | 2200 |
| Moose | 1000 |
| Shadow | 750 |
| The Void (ghost void) | 600 |
| Seal | 400 |
| Elaking | 350 |
| Elaking (lantern) | 350 |
| Baby Seal | 200 |
| Greydwarf Shaman (frozen) | 120 |
| Greydwarf (frozen) | 100 |
| Skeleton (deep north) | 100 |
Barka is the toughest regular creature here at 2200 health, more than twice the Moose at 1000. The frozen Greydwarf and the Skeleton (deep north) are the weakest, both at 100 health. The Seal has 400 health and the Baby Seal 200, so the adult has twice as much.
The Moose is worth a second look. Valheim 1.0 lets you tame it and ride it with the new Moose Saddle. Other new creatures that came with 1.0 include Eyeless One, Gammeltroll, Hexen, Krigen and Writhan, along with Barka, Elaking, Seal and the Moose.
Resources
Three resources are tied to the Deep North:
Kale is one of the new plantable crops in 1.0, alongside Oats and Poteitr.
Gear and food these materials unlock
| Kind | Items |
|---|---|
| Weapons and shields | Snowball |
| Food and meads | Lingonberry Juice, Onion Soup, Salad, Wolf Skewer |
The Snowball appears in both the resource list and the weapons list. The rest of what the Deep North's materials give you is food and mead: Lingonberry Juice, Onion Soup, Salad and Wolf Skewer.

The boss: Kall Fimbulbringer
| Boss | Kall Fimbulbringer |
| Health | 10000 |
| Summon | 3 Malicious Bloods on the altar |
At 10000 health, Kall Fimbulbringer has more than four times the health of Barka, the toughest regular Deep North creature at 2200.
To summon the boss, place 3 Malicious Bloods on the altar. The Deep North boss room can appear up to 3 times per world and needs an altitude above 80 m, the highest requirement of any Deep North place.

- Snow now falls thick and deep. You must clear it away before building, and you need to watch your step on frozen seas and ponds. The new Snow Shovel helps with the clearing.
- The Jotun invade Valheim, and you can go out into the world to halt their advance. Two new events, "The Jotun have found you" and "They emerge from below…", are part of this.
- The new Grappling Hook lets you cross heights more easily.
- At the outer edges of Valheim you can find alternate versions of earlier biomes.
- There are 16 Protection & Battle Idols scattered through the world. You can bring them to a hidden forge to try to upgrade your items further.

Changes and balancing
- Bjorn now spawns less often in the Black Forest and has less health.
- Mistlands and Ashlands gear is more durable.
- In the Ashlands, several enemies spawn less often and Charred monsters spawn more frequently.
- Wisp Light, Wisp Torch and Mistwalker clear mist over a wider range. All Mistlands weapons now remove mist too.
- Rare enemy drops were tweaked so you are less likely to kill many enemies without ever getting the drop.
- All hair and beard styles are available in the character creator from the start, not just at the Barber Station.
- The Hammer and Serving Tray menus were overhauled, and all build piece descriptions were rewritten.
- A new Draw Distance graphics setting shortens or lengthens the simulation distance. Shorter improves performance, while longer may cost performance but looks better on high-end setups.
- An optional HUD window, enabled in settings, shows who built each build piece.
- A new save system splits world data into chunks to improve performance and is designed to survive failures during writing.
- Player movement animations were overhauled, and a Magica Cloth system now drives capes and other cloth items. More creatures have wake up and sleep animation variants.
- The player now burns green when hit by the Fader's fire, and the Fader Relic has updated functionality.
- Items spawned with cheat commands are marked as "cheated item" in the inventory. There are new dev commands such as snow, biomeinfo and findbiome.
- Other additions include Ukrainian as an officially supported language, an EULA for online play and vibration support on some controllers. The main menu was cleaned up with the changelog hidden by default, and jumping onto edges while in the water is easier.
Fixes
- The sun no longer shines through gaps in grausten floor pieces, the Demolisher's missing plane is fixed, and Z-fighting on rugs is fixed.
- A memory leak connected to the mini map and some IPv6-related bugs were fixed.
- Missing foot step effects on Ashstone and Ancient (Ashlands ruins) were fixed. Harpoon released text and max summon texts are now localized.
- The "[1-8]" key hint no longer shows when using a controller. The Manage Saves menu no longer loads slowly when V-sync is on.
- World generation is much faster, and terrain manipulation uses less network traffic.
- Audio and texture optimizations reduce memory usage, and audio changes also reduce lag spikes. Several models were also optimized.
- Removing an unnecessary per-frame check improves CPU performance, particularly on Xbox One. A fixed time budget for removing navmesh links should slightly improve frame pacing on weaker systems.
- On Xbox the main menu shows the Xbox user, and aliasing in Xbox profile pictures is fixed. The "Balanced" graphics preset is selectable on non-120 Hz TVs, falling back to "Performance" at 60 Hz output.
- Ambient occlusion and the graphics preset descriptions were improved.
